One of the most popular ways to pass time in India’s Auroville is immersed in body temperature water giving or receiving Watsu. The giver floats and moves the receiver on the surface and under the surface through a series of choreographed steps and improvisations.

The surrender required of the receiver to be taken under water by another is thought to create the feeling of re-entrance to the womb. The giver’s movements are similar to Ti Chi. As the receiver surrenders, the body requires less oxygen allowing them to be brought under water for longer and longer times. Watsu was actually developed and is an export of Northern California.
